Background

Epstein - Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human virus which causes infectious mononucleosis (IM), a self limiting lymphoproliferative disease. The Epstein-Barr virus viral-capsid antigen (EBV-VCA) is the viral protein that forms the viral capsid of the Epstein-Barr virus. It is the antigen targeted by anti-VCA antibodies. Such antibodies can be used in serology to diagnose infectious mononucleosis. IgM antibodies to a protein on the viral coat (viral capsid antigen) usually appear early in an infection and then disappear they are often a sign of a recent infection or reactivation. A first time EBV infection is indicated if IgM antibody to the viral capsid antigen is present and antibody to EBV nuclear antigen, or EBNA, is absent.
