Background

FGF4 (fibroblast growth factor 4), also known as heparin secretory-transforming protein 1 (HST, HST-1, HSTF-1), Heparin-binding growth factor 4 (HBGF-4), FGFK or KFGF (Kaposi’s sarcoma associated FGF), is a secreted, heparin binding protein belonging to the FGF family. The full-length human FGF4 precursor is a 206 amino acid (aa) precursor protein consisting of a 33 aa signal peptide and a 173 aa mature protein with a heparin binding region near the C-terminus. Mature human FGF4 protein is 91% and 82% identical to mouse and rat FGF4, respectively. Expression of FGF4 is spatially and temporally regulated during embryonic development. FGF4 plays an important role in the regulation of embryonic development, cell proliferation and differentiation. FGF4 can bind to different members of the FGF receptor family including FGFR1, FGFR2, FGFR3 and FGFR4, to activate a variety of cellular processes involved in embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth and invasion.
